The women’s Skyhawk basketball team kept the crowd on the edge of their seats in a battle against Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State last Tuesday night. In the end UTM brought home a 75-72 overtime victory against the Lady Racers.

Junior Nicole Rivers tied the game with just 50 seconds left to play when she sank a three-pointer that sent the game into overtime. Rivers finished the game with eight total points.

In the last 15 seconds of overtime play, junior Keva Robinson scored five points and Rivers ensured the victory with four free throws. Robinson scored nine points and had seven rebounds in the game.

With just 4.9 seconds left on the clock in OT, MSU’s Remington scored a basket to cut the score to 73-72. Lady Racer Jill Fulkerson fouled Rivers who sank two free throws to end the game at 75-72. The Skyhawks were 14 for 19 at the free throw line while the Lady Racers were 16 for 19 at the line Murray State stayed in the game with their rebounding skills and making 10 out of 30 attempted three-pointers.

Sophomore Andreika Jackson led the Skyhawks to their victory by scoring a career-high 33 points and lead the team defensively pulling down 11 defensive rebounds and two offensive rebounds for a grand total of 13 rebounds for the Skyhawks.

Senior Danielle Page tossed in eight points against the Lady Racers scoring two of five three-point field goals for the Skyhawks and senior Jenny Lannom grabbed eight rebounds and had eight points for the Skyhawks.

The Skyhawks then grabbed their third consecutive OVC win this season against the Tennessee State Lady Tigers on Thursday night, 72-63.

Tennessee State was in a 26-24 lead at the half, but fell a little to short in the end.

The Skyhawks used a 26-13 run early in the second half to jump out to a 50-38 lead against the Lady Tigers with just nine minutes left to play in the game.

Grabbing her first career double-double junior Deina Willingham put up 13 points for the Skyhawks and lead the team in defense when she snagged 10 strong defense rebounds and 4 offense grabs totaling 14 rebounds.

Sophomore Andreika Jackson lead the Skyhawks Thursday night with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Next in line was freshman Kristin Archie, who came off the bench to toss in 11 points for the Skyhawks. Archie scored 2 of the 3 Skyhawk three-point field goals of the night. Nicole Rivers had nine points for UTM against the Lady Tigers.

For Tennessee State Leslie Dean lead the Lady Tiger with 17 points. Quanecia Fletcher sank 11 total points and Lakisha Clay grabbed 10 points to keep the Lady Tigers close to the Skyhawks.

Clay and Fletcher were the strongest rebounders for the Lady Tigers of the night, Clay grabbing eight and Fletcher coming down with seven rebounds.

UTM out rebounded the Lady Tigers 48-36 in the battle but turned the ball over more to the Tigers.

At the free throw line UTM had 36 attempts and sank 25 of those baskets. Tennessee State only attempted 20 shots and scored 9 points.

2002-2003 was the last time that the Skyhawks had won three consecutive games in the Ohio Valley Confrence they defeated Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky and Southeast Missouri State. UTM women’s basketball team returns to play Jan. 27 on the road. The Skyhawks travel to take the floor against the Morehead State Lady Eagles.
