UTM partners in Chinese law exchange

A new foreign exchange program will partner UTM with Shandong University Law School of China. The program is one facet of a three-part grant program sponsored by a private gift to the university.

Ten students from Shandong University Law school, located in Jinan City, Shandong Province, will be the first to participate in the program. The group will study here at UTM before traveling to Nashville and Washington, D.C., to see the American legal and political systems and culture at all levels.

In turn, UTM students participating in the program will visit Shandong University for a two week study of the Chinese legal structure. The grant will also provide funding for a special-education awareness initiative and scholarships for travel-study exchanges.

More than twenty students are expected to receive scholarships for travel-studies or exchanges this academic year. Visiting international students and professors will also benefit from the exchange scholarships.

“This exchange program is another way that UT Martin students will see the impact of living in a global economy,” said Dunagan. “In turn, these programs allow citizens of other countries to learn about America.”

UTM, in partnership with Shandong University launched the American Civics and Culture Program (ACCP) on September 17. The ACCP program is under the direction of the UTM Center for Global Studies and International Education.

“This is especially promising as we mount a vigorous international and intercultural awareness initiative to make sure our students are prepared to succeed in today’s global structure,” said Dr. John Petersen, University of Tennessee president.
