The UTM golf team finished 12th in the two-day Harris Fall Classic at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson, Mo. The Skyhawks posted a three-round team score of 911.
Southern Illinois won the 16-team tournament with an 877, while Samford was second with 880 and Tennessee Tech was third with 887.
UTM was led by sophomore Reise Kelly from Nashville. Kelly shot 221 and was tied with two others for 10th place in the tournament. Kelly fired rounds of 75, 74 and 72.
Freshman Hunter Prescott was five strokes behind Kelly with a 226. Prescott carded rounds of 80, 71 and 75. That second-round 71 was one-under par.
“I was pleased with the way Reise Kelly and Hunter Prescott played,” said Jerry Carpenter, the Skyhawk head golf coach. “They both did a good job.”
Skyhawk senior Scott Carpenter and junior Heath Prescott both turned in 233s. Carpenter shot 77, 78 and 78, while Prescott shot rounds of 76, 81 and 76.
“Heath and Hunter hit the ball extremely well throughout the tournament, they just didn’t putt well,” Jerry Carpenter said. Jason Bell played as an individual during the tournament (his score was not included in the Skyhawks’ team score) and he had two good rounds.
Bell shot an 82 in the first round and came back with a 78 and a 76.
“I am encouraged by our young talent,” Carpenter said. “This is one of the best starts we have had.”
The Skyhawks return to action Sept. 15-16 in the Gulf Coast Collegiate Classic hosted by Nicholls State.
