UTM goes 4-1 to win Western Kentucky Invitational

Senior Nicole Davis hit two home runs and pitched a complete game to lead the Skyhawk softball team to a 4-3 win over Western Kentucky University and the WKU Classic championship.
Davis, a 6-1, right-hander from Alpine, Calif., was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player for her effort.
The senior pitcher and first baseman went two-for-four at the plate with three RBI in the championship game.
On the mound, she pitched eight innings, scattered nine hits, gave up two earned runs and struck out eight.
Overall in the tournament, Davis batted .340 with nine RBIs, two home runs, a double and three runs scored.
On the mound, she went 2-0 with 11 strikeouts. She allowed three earned runs and 14 hits in 15 innings pitched.
Also making the all-tournament team was Brandy Whalen, Emily Webb and Megan Mizell.
Whalen went 4-for-14 with three runs scored and a double, while Webb went five-for-15 with six RBI, two home runs and a double.
Mizell went five-for-13 with three RBI, a home run and three runs scored.
The Skyhawks advanced to the championship game by knocking off Indiana in the semifinals 4-3. Davis, Mizell and Webb had RBI in the game. Webb led the charge with a two-run homer.
The Skyhawks opened the tournament Saturday afternoon against Indiana and claimed a 2-1 win. Mizell doubled and homered in the game. Christa Webb also homered in the victory.
Davis pitched seven innings and scatted five hits. She struck out three and walked two.
The Skyhawks knocked off Buffalo, 6-1, Saturday.
Davis and Whalen had doubles in the game. Davis also drove in four runs in the game.
Senior Allison Buckley pitched seven innings. She gave up one run, four hits, two walks and struck out four.
The Skyhawks only loss in the tournament was an 8-7 decision to Western Kentucky Saturday night.
The Skyhawks trailed 8-2 going into the seventh inning and scored five runs.
Webb had a double and a home run, while Mizell also homered. Jen Young, Whalen, Mizell and Webb had two hits each in the game.
With the 4-1 won-loss record in the Western Kentucky Classic, the Skyhawks improve to 8-5 overall.
Head coach Donley Canary is four games away from winning his 100th game at UTM. Canary is in his fourth year at the helm.
He can pick up his 100th win next week as the Skyhawks play 10 games in Florida at the annual Rebel Games.
The Skyhawks will then open up conference play on March 19 when they face the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State in a triple header over the weekend.
The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Betteye Giles field.
