UTM cowboys ride to first place in UWAL rodeo, women fourth

Skyhawk rodeo coach John Luthi says a lot can still happen during the course of the current Ozark Region rodeo schedule.

“Things can change, that’s why we cannot take things for granted,” Luthi said.

The Skyhawk cowboys completed their most recent chore --- winning the University of West Alabama (UWAL) rodeo --- this past weekend in Livingston, Ala.

UTM claimed the team title with 328.3 points, while Missouri Valley College was second with 224.9 points and Arkansas-Monticello was third with 195 points.

With the team title at West Alabama, UTM has won now won three of the four Ozark Region rodeos this season.

The bareback continues to be one of the strongest events for UTM cowboys.

At UWAL, Matt Bright won the average with 149 points on two, while Scotty NeSmith was second with 146 on two.

Boyd Quinley, from Cordova, Tenn., finished third in the calf roping long go.

In the saddle bronc, Tennessee-Martin’s Jason Forsythe, a transfer from Missouri Valley College, won the first go with a 74-point ride.

Teammate Ty Atchison spolie fourth in the first go.

Atchison, from Jackson, Mo., was second in the second go and second in the average with 138 on two rides.

“Ty is just a freshman, and he just keeps hammering away,” Luthi said. “If he continues to work hard he will continue to get better.”

Like the bareback, the steer wrestling event favored the Skyhawk cowboys.

NeSmith won the long go with a time of 3.9. Jason Dement finished fourth with a 4.6 time.

In the steer wrestling short go, Zak Danison came out on top with a 4.0 time, while NeSmith was fourth. Danison was second in the average with a combined time of 9.0, while NeSmith was third with a combined 9.2.

In the team roping Quinley teamed with Andrew Trainor from Forrest, Ill., to take fourth in the short go and in the average with a combined time of 29.8.

Whit Ashe from Savannah, Tenn. was second in the bull riding long go with a 76-point ride and split second in the short go with a 78-point ride.

He had 154 on two and that was good enough to win the bull riding average. “Whit had a couple of good rides in the bull riding,” Luthi said. “He managed to get a couple of good breaks and that always helps.”

On the women’s side, UTM finished fourth in the team standings at UWAL with 110 points. The host team, UWAL, claimed the team title with 335 points. Arkansas-Monticello was second with 165 points, while Troy State was third with 130 points.

UTM’s Kelly Miller split third in the goat tying long go. In the barrel racing, UTM’s Courtney Barnfield was third in the long, first in the short go and second in the average. Audrey Lipsky finished third in the barrel racing short go.

The Skyhawk women have finished among the top four teams in three of the four Ozark Region rodeos this season.

“Overall our women struggled at this rodeo, but when you look at it we don’t have a lot of women on our team,” Luthi said.

Both the men and women return to action Nov. 18-20 when they travel to nearby Murray State.
