Tennis splits series with EKU, Morehead, women perfect in OVC

The Skyhawks tennis team improved their record Friday with a big conference win over Eastern Kentucky.
The Skyhawks won all three doubles matches and 4 of 6 singles matches to win the day 5-2 in Richmond, KY.
The Skyhawks are still perfect in conference play The loss was the first of Eastern Kentucky’s women’s team in OVC play, as they are now 3-1 in conference action.
In the first singles match, Sari Nortje won over EKU’s Meredith Giles 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
In the second singles match, EKU’s Lucia Vojtkova picked up the win over Gayatri Ramesh 4-6, 6-0, 7-6.
In the third singles match of the day, Elly Shearman defeated EKU’s Hannah Bartsch 6-2, 6-3.
The fourth match saw Katrina Domela walk over EKU’s Sandra Sodditt 6-7, 6-1, 7-6.
The fifth match brought EKU’s Lindsay Herrera over Jeane de Wet 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
The sixth and final match closed out with Elizma Schooneef picking up the win over EKU’s Terin Roof 6-3, 6-2.
In men’s action, the Skyhawks tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to EKU 4-3. The EKU men’s team is still perfect in conference play standing at 5-0 in the OVC.
The Colonels started the day by picking up the points from all three doubles matches with wins over the Skyhawk teams of Anzola/Anzola, Prinsloo/Mollaymeri, and McGuire/Slabbert.
However, the Skyhawks had something different to say about the singles matches.
Gustavo Anzola picked up his win over EKU’s Wospil 6-4, 6-3; and Dirk Prinsloo defeated EKU’s Gratzki 6-2, 6-2. EKU came back and won the next 3 singles matches before Olti Mollaymeri defeated EKU’s Simic in the final match of the day 6-2, 6-2.
On Saturday, The Skyhawks remained perfect in the OVC with another victory over Morehead State.
The Skyhawks dominated the Lady Eagles 6-1 and lost only one singles match the entire day.
In the first match Sari Nortje defeated MSU’s Mariana Weschenfelder 7-5, 6-0.
The second match saw Gayatri Ramesh fall to MSU’s Yolanda Araujo 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
In the third match of the day Elly Shearman defeated MSU’s Alex Becka 6-3, 6-4.
The fourth match of the day brought about Katrina Domela defeating MSU’s Laura Ferreira 7-6 (4), 6-2.
In the fifth match, Jeanne de Wet defeated MSU’s Leah Lobnitz 6-0, 6-2.
And the final match of the day saw Elizma Schoonees defeat MSU’s Ariana Gracia-Medrano 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles matches the teams of Shearman/Schoonees, Nortje/Domela, and Ramesh/de Wet picked up UTM wins over MSU’s Araujo/Becka, Weschenfelder/Ferreira, and Lobnitz/Gracia-Medrano. The Skyhawk women are currently 6-0 in OVC play with wins over the likes of Austin Peay, Jacksonville State, Samford, Tennessee State, Eastern Kentucky, and Morehead State.
In men’s action, the Skyhawks dropped another close one to the Morehead State Eagles 4-3 on Saturday.
Dirk Prinsloo picked up a UTM win over MSU’s Peter Taylor 6-3, 6-3; and Adolfo Anzola defeated MSU’s Louis Orieux 6-2, 6-3 in singles action.
The teams of Anzola-Anzola and McGuire-Prinsloo won their doubles matches to help the cause Saturday over MSU’s Johnstone-McLeod and Kachel-Damian Storti.
The Skyhawk men are currently 2-4 in OVC play. The UTM tennis teams were back in action yesterday vs. Southern Indiana and will play again tomorrow at home against intrastate foe Belmont University
