When the band Story of the Year exploded onto the rock scene in 2003, little did they know how predictable that name would be.
With the debut of their CD Page Avenue, the boys from St. Louis--- vocalist Dan Marsala, guitarists Phillip Sneed, Ryan Phillips, bassist Adam Russell and drummer Joshua Willis--- established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. With two hit singles and a Warped Tour behind them, they’re ready to settle in for the long haul.
And who could blame them? With lyrics as emotional as a romance movie and music that goes from screeching electric guitars to the softer side of acoustic, they’ve managed to gather a huge following of devoted fans.
Their second single, entitled Anthem of Our Dying Day, isn’t quite as angst-ridden as its title may lead you to believe. It’s actually about ghosts. So maybe their eccentricity is just like any other rock band. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t write about the real world. Take ‘Sidewalks’ for example, which they plan to release for their next single. It’s about how they miss their home and their friends.
You’ll be surprised to find a Parental Advisory sticker slapped on the front, especially when you read the lyrics and realize that there are no ‘explicit’ words that usually earns an album that prestigious black and white mark. But when you run through titles---‘Until the Day I Die,’ ‘Anthem of Our Dying Day,’ ‘Swallow the Knife,’and ‘Razorblades’---it’s pretty easy to see why some people might be worried about youngsters getting their hands on this album.
So what could you find on this CD that might tickle your fancy? Fans of the harder side of rock will find a familiar name tied to the project---it was produced by John Feldmann, a member of The Used. If listening to guys scream isn’t your cup of tea, check out the more melodic ‘Anthem of Our Dying Day’ and ‘Swallow the Knife.’ The words of ‘Page Avenue’ and ‘Sidewalks’ both speak of missing home, friends and of the days that have gone by.
The band is currently on tour, with plans to start working on their second album in January. Also in the works is a DVD, and be sure to check out their new single ‘Sidewalks.’
So keep an eye out. Story of the Year is going to be just that for a long while to come.
