Give UTM softball pitcher Kendra Kosco a hit, a run and a pair of sun glasses and most of the time she’ll give you a masterful outing.

Kosco got a lead off triple from teammate Jennifer Young in the bottom of the first inning and watched Young score on a wild pitch and that’s all the UTM senior needed. Kosco wore her sun glasses as usual, she struck out 11, including six in a row, and she led the Skyhawks to a 4-0 Ohio Valley Conference win over Austin Peay Tuesday afternoon at Bettye Giles Field in Martin. The Skyhawks improve to 20-24 on the year and 11-6 in the OVC, while Austin Peay falls to 17-24 overall and 7-6 in the league. The Skyhawks travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., Saturday, April 26 for a conference doubleheader against Southeast Missouri State and then close out the series with a 1 p.m., home game Sunday, April 27 against SEMO. The Skyhawks will celebrate Senior Day before Sunday’s contest.

Kosco, who already set a new Skyhawk career record for strikeouts earlier this season, struck out six of the first seven Austin Peay batters she faced. With 11 strikeouts against Austin Peay.

The Skyhawks added to their one run in the fourth inning when Kristin Runyan singled to right field. Senior Meredith Ramsey singled and junior Angela Baize plated Runyan with a double to left field. Ramsey scored on a Linsey Moffit ground ball. In the sixth inning, junior Sarah Daws hit her fourth homer of the season to give the Skyhawks a 4-0 win.

Kosco took care of Austin Peay in the sixth and seventh innings. She managed to get two fly balls, three ground outs and her final strikeout of the game. With the mound victory, Kosco improves to 11-9 on the season. She gave up three hits in the game and never allowed a walk.

Austin Peay freshman Jen Simpkins had two hits against Kosco, while Jenny Kelly opened the game with a lead-off single off for Senior Kosco.

A tough day hitting sealed UTM's fate as the Skyhawks fell to conference foe Tennessee Tech 10-1 Saturday afternoon. The game was the finale of a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series with the doubleheader being played Friday because of the holiday weekend. The Golden Eagles won the first game Friday 3-2 and won the second game 7-6 in 12 innings. UTM fell to 19-24 on the season and 10-6 in the OVC. The Skyhawks were only able to pull out two hits in last Saturday's loss to Tech. Senior Stephanie Paris singled to right center in the fifth inning to give the Skyhawks their first hit. Sarah Daws followed up with a double in the same inning to score Linsey Moffit. Moffit reached base on a fielder’s choice.

The Golden Eagles put four runs on the board in each the first and seventh innings. Tech also picked up two runs in the second inning. Stephanie Dallman was three-for-three with two runs and four RBI. She hit a two-run home run in the top of the second inning. LeeAnne Mongar, Kacy Bennett and Marianne Novac each had two hits in the game. Tennessee Tech out-hit the Skyhawks 14-2 in the game.

Sophomore Allison Buckley takes the loss for the Skyhawks. She started and pitched 0.1 innings and was pulled after giving up four hits and four runs. Senior Kendra Kosco came in to pitch 3.2 innings. She gave up five hits and four runs, never striking out a batter. Andrea Rushing followed up with two innings pitched, striking out one batter and giving up one hit. Freshman Kelly Swafford closed out the game, giving up four hits and four runs in one inning.

An Ohio Valley Conference showdown took place in Martin, Tenn. last Friday afternoon as the league’s top two teams faced off in a doubleheader. Tennessee Tech took both games, winning each by one run with game two going to 12 innings.

A two-run home run by Kristin Runyan in the bottom on the sixth inning of game one came up big for the Skyhawks but was not enough to get the win as Tech pulled out the 3-2 win. The Golden Eagles put the first runs on the board after four scoreless innings on a two-run home run by Kacy Bennett.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Runyan fired back with her two-run home run to tie the game, 2-2. Stephanie Dallmann picked up the winning run in the top of the seventh inning as she scored on a single by Bennett. Bennett, from nearby Huntingdon, Tenn., was three-of-four for the game with one run and three RBI. The Skyhawks were limited to five hits in the game. Runyan homered with Jennifer Young, Meredith Ramsey, Nicole Davis and Stephanie Paris each had singles in the game.

Daws came back for the Skyhawks in the bottom of the 10th as she hit a double to left center to score Moffit. Whalen singled to score Dempsey, who was pinch running for Daws, to tie the game, 5-5.

The Golden Eagles cranked out another couple runs in the 12th inning as LeeAnne Mongar led off the inning with a two-run home run to left center to take a 7-5 lead. Lovelady was placed on second base to start the inning and also scored on the play. The Skyhawks were only able to squeeze out one more run in the bottom of the 12th as Tech rode out the 7-6 win. Runyan scored for UTM on a ground out by Beth Buttrey. Runyan was placed on second base to begin that at-bat and moved to third base on a wild pitch.

Senior Kendra Kosco pitched the entire 12 innings to take the loss for the Skyhawks. She threw seven strikeouts, giving up 14 hits in the game. She never walked a batter. Tia Brenning picks up the win for Tennessee Tech. She started the game and left in the eighth inning but re-entered the game in the 10th inning. She had six strikeouts in 9.2 innings pitched, giving up 10 hits.
