Softball winning streak snapped by Tech’s Golden Eaglettes in Cookeville

The Skyhawk softball team saw its five-game win streak come to an abrupt end this past weekend in Cookeville as the team was swept by first-place Tennessee Tech.

The Golden Eaglettes took the first game by a score of 9-1 in five innings. Skyhawk starting pitcher Ashley Myatt pitched four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. She also struck out three Golden Eaglette hitters.

The Skyhawks fell behind early as Tech scored twice in the first inning and once more in the second inning. The Golden Eagles then added six more runs in the fifth inning to end the game Emily Webb drove in the Skyhawks’ only run in the fourth inning on a single to left field that scored Justine Pineda from second base. The second game of Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader was rescheduled for Sunday as part of a doubleheader.

The Skyhawks continued to struggle at the plate on Sunday as they managed only eight hits in the two games combined.

Tech won the first game by a score of 5-2 as starter Bonnie Bynum recorded 14 strikeouts and allowed only two hits. She carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Young’s single came with two outs in the inning and ruined Bynum’s no-hit bid.

Both of the Skyhawks’ runs came on a home run by Brandy Whalen in the sixth inning. Jennifer Young reached on a single and then stole second base before Whalen drove her home.

The Golden Eaglettes broke the game open in the third inning, scoring three runs to add to their 1-0 lead. Consecutive singles set up a three-run home run by freshman Danielle Wallace to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

Holly Templeton pitched three innings, allowing five runs on seven hits in the loss. Kara Harper finished the game for the Skyhawks, giving up only one hit over the final three innings.

The Golden Eaglettes completed the sweep with a 4-0 shutout in game three. Sophomore Beth Boden led off the game with a home run to set the tone for the game. A two-run home run in the third inning extended the lead to 3-0. The game’s final run came in the fifth inning on a fielder’s choice play. The Skyhawks picked up six hits in the game but were unable to capitalize. Myatt allowed three runs on six hits. She also walked one and struck out four in three and two-thirds innings. Ashton Strode came on in relief to pitch the final two and one-third innings, allowing one run on one hit with a walk and a strikeout.

The losses dropped the Skyhawks’ record to 24-19-1 overall and 7-7 in OVC play. They will host St. Louis in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Bettye Giles Field.
