Softball takes Morehead in three game conference series


Youth and experience shared the spotlight over the weekend as the Skyhawk softball team swept a three-game series from Morehead State.

Freshman Savannah Roberts put on a show in Friday’s doubleheader. Roberts went 3-for-7 at the plate, driving in five runs in the two games.

The Skyhawks took the first game by a 3-0 score with Roberts accounting for all three runs.

She put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard in the third inning with a double down the left field line.

Jennifer Young and Brandy Whalen each added two hits in the game for the Skyhawks.

On the mound, the Skyhawks got a solid performance from Ashton Strode.

The sophomore allowed only three hits in seven innings and struck out four Eagle hitters. With the win, she improved her record to 10-9 on the season.

The first Eagle baserunner reached on an error in the third inning. The next batter tried unsuccessfully to stretch a single into a double, stranding the runner on third base.

The Skyhawks stranded five baserunners over the last three innings.

Freshman Ashley Myatt pitched a complete game in a 5-1 Skyhawk victory in the second half of the doubleheader. Myatt earned her 11th win of the season by holding the Eagles to one run on four hits. Stacy Weaver gave the Skyhawks the early lead with a single in the second inning that scored Emily Webb from second base.

The Skyhawks added another run in the third inning by playing small ball. Young reached on an error to lead off the inning. That was followed by another error that allowed Brittany Nash to reach base. Young scored on the play to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Eagles scored their only run in the bottom of the third inning following a leadoff walk.

A sacrifice bunt and a double allowed Chrissy Timberlake to score the Eagles’ run.

Roberts contributed a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to finish the scoring for the Skyhawks.

Ashley Hubbell took the loss for the Eagles. The senior allowed five runs on ten hits. Four of the runs were earned.Her record fell to 5-9 on the season.

Senior Emily Webb drove in three runs with a double and a home run to help the Skyhawks complete the sweep with a 7-2 win on Saturday.

The Skyhawks got their scoring done early. They scored three runs in the first inning and one each in the second and third innings. Their final two runs came in the seventh inning.

Freshman Kara Harper pitched four and two-third innings for the Skyhawks to pick up the win. She allowed four hits and two unearned runs while striking out three. She improved her record to 4-1 on the season.

Holly Templeton pitched the final two and one-third innings to earn her eighth save.

The Skyhawk bats were hot from the start. Nash led off the game with a single. Two hits and one MSU error later, the Skyhawks held a 3-0 lead.

Whalen drove Nash home with a single up the middle and scored on a throwing error. Justine Pineda reached on an infield single and scored on a double by E. Webb.

C. Webb doubled and advanced to third base on a wild pitch to set up the fourth Skyhawk run.

Nash created the fourth run when she singled to centerfield to drive in C. Webb.

The Eagles scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as the result of two Skyhawk errors.

Templeton replaced Harper on the mound and recorded the final out of the inning.

With the wins, the Skyhawks improved their record to 29-19-1 on the season and 10-7 in the OVC. MSU fell to 10-31 overall and 1-16 in OVC play.

The team returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Clarksville to take on Austin Peay in a single game. Their next home action is this weekend. They will host Eastern Kentucky in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday’s single game will also begin at 1 p.m.
