Soccer holds undefeated record

The UTM soccer team hits the road for its second weekend of regular season play.

The Skyhawks will face the Ladyjacks of Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Nacogdoches, Texas, and the Lady Indians of Arkansas State University (ASU) at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at Jonesboro, Ark.

The Skyhawks shut out Cumberland University, 5-0, last Friday giving them their first win of the season. The following Sunday, the Skyhawks tied with Southwest Missouri State, 1-1 in double overtime.

The Skyhawks are facing SFA for the second time in school history. UTM trails the series 0-1-0.

SFA is a member of the Southland Conference where they were picked to finish fifth this season in preseason polls.

The Ladyjacks return eight starters and 13 letterwinners from their 2002 squad. SFA is led by head coach Nicole Nelson.

The Ladyjacks enter Friday's match against the Skyhawks with an 0-2 record for the season with losses against Tulsa and Oral Roberts.

UTM will be going up against Arkansas State for the third time. The Skyhawks lead the all-time series 2-0-0.

The Lady Indians sport a current 0-1-0 record for the season. In their first regular season game, ASU was shut out 6-0 by Saint Louis University.

ASU was picked to finish eighth out of nine in the Sun Belt Conference Coaches Preseason Poll. The Lady Indians are coached by Ken Hefner.

“This is a long trip for us,” said soccer head coach Nathan Pifer. “It will be a good test for the team. We just take it one game at a time and hope to improve from one game to the next.”

The Skyhawks are currently undefeated, posting a 1-0-1 record for the 2003 season.
