Skyhawks falter in OT


The University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawk women's basketball team suffered a 90-86 overtime loss to visiting Morehead State Thursday night in Skyhawk Arena.

With the loss the Skyhawks fall to 6-11 overall and 3-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference race. Morehead State improves to 7-11 and 4-3 in the league.

The Skyhawks return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday when they host Eastern Kentucky in a key OVC game.

Senior Tiffany Brundige led the Skyhawks with 18 points. She went six of 10 from the field and hit five three-pointers in the contest.

Five other Skyhawks also finished in double-digits.

Junior Danielle Page, from Bradford netted 14 points, while Julie Young, Chandra Carey and Andreika Jackson tossed in 11 points each. Jenny Lannom added 10 points to the tally.

Morehead State was led by Kandi Brown with 24 points. Four other Lady Eagles also tacked on double-digit points against the Skyhawks.

The Skyhawks enjoyed a five-point lead at the half, but 1:13 remaining in regulation Brown hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Eagles a 78-74 advantage.

Young tied the game for the Skyhawks with four consecutive free throws in the final minute. The Skyhawks were fortunate to get a turnover with three seconds to play, but the desperation shot at the buzzer was no good.

Morehead State jumped out to a four-point cushion in the overtime period and never looked back, although the Skyhawks were within two points with 10 seconds to play.

With seven seconds to go Brown iced the game for Morehead with a pair of free throws.

The Skyhawks hit 20-of-31 free throws in the contest and that's what co-head coach Kim Van Atta said was the difference in the contest.

The Skyhawks were also on the short end in the rebounding column. Morehead claimed a 47-39 advantage there as Shelly Johnson led the way with a dozen rebounds.

Freshman Andreika Jackson led the Skyhawks with eight rebounds.
