The Skyhawk soccer team recorded a 1-0 victory over Tennessee Tech Friday. The victory improves their record to 3-7-1 ( 1-2 in the OVC conference.) and moves Tennessee Tech to 1-8-2 (0-2-1 in the OVC conference.)
The only goal came into play at 4:56 into the match. When co-captain Jamie Price sent a penalty kick past the outstretched arms of Golden Eagle goal keeper Loretta McNamee. The goal was Price’s first of the season and the third game winner of her career.
The Skyhawks dominated the first half, keeping the ball on their side for most of the time period. They only allowed five shot attempts in the first period.
In the second half the Golden Eagles tried to mount an offensive attack but the Skyhawks were able to turn them away. The Golden Eagles played much more offensive and physical in the second half. They had 15 attempts at the goal in the second half.
However, Skyhawk goalkeeper Cara Sullivan was like a brick wall and was not letting anything get past her. She had 12 saves for the game.
“On the whole I am very pleased with today,” said Skyhawk head coach Craig Roberts. We persevered and did some of the best attacking we have done all season. It was important to get an early lead because all the conference teams are very equal in ability and one goal can often decide it.”
The Skyhawks will try to extend their three-game home winning streak when they play Austin Peay on Sunday. They are 3-1 against the Governors and are looking for revenge after losing last year in overtime to the Governors. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
