Skyhawk golfer wins Grover Page Classic, team finishes fourth

Junior Hunter Prescott shot a 5-under-par 67 in the third and final round of the annual Grover Page Classic Tuesday at Pickwick Dam State Park and won the two-day, three-round tournament with a scorecard playoff.

Prescott shot a three-round 211 as did Murray State's Kyle Shirley. Prescott shot 1-over-par in the first round and a 1-under-par in the second round.

His 67 in the third round was the best score in the tournament.

Shirley shot a 2-under-par 70 in the first round, a 4-under-par 68 in the second round and a 1-over-par 73 in the third round.

Murray State won the team title with a three-round 859, while North Alabama was second with a three-round 868.

Skyhawk's junior varsity team finished third, one stroke behind North Alabama. The Skyhawks' junior varsity team included Prescott, Bradley Stevens, Wesley Stewart and Ryan Scearce.

Stevens shot a three-round 214 and finished fifth in the tournament. Stewart shot 217 and finished tied for the ninth, while Scearce shot a 227. Stevens shot a 3-under-par 69 in the first round, while Stewart carded a 69 in the second round.

The Skyhawks shot a combined 282, 6-under-par, in the second round.

"This is the first time we had all four players on the same team post under-par scores in an 18-hole round," said Jerry Carpenter, the Skyhawks head coach.

The Skyhawk varsity team finished fifth with a three-round 878.

Junior Trey McNeil from Dyersburg led the team with a 219. He finished tied for 13th in the tournament. McNeil shot even par in the first round and came back with a 1-under-par 71 in the second round. He carded a 76 in the third round.

Senior Reise Kelly was one stroke behind McNeil with a 220 and finished tied for 15th.

Sophomore Robert Lents had an ace in the tournament and finished with a 224. Lents, from Jackson, shot 1-under-par in the second round and 1-over-par in the third round.

Jason Bell and John Slayton both carded a three-round score of 226. Both also shot one-under-par 73s.

"The main team played some steady golf with three solid rounds," Carpenter said. All nine Skyhawk golfers finished among the top 37 out of 79 players.

"These scores show the depth of our squad and our players continue to improve," Carpenter said.

"This is the best start our team has had for the spring."

The Skyhawk golf team wil return to the links when they travel to the 14th Annual Grub Mart Classic at Silver Lakes Golf Course in Jacksonville, Ala.
