SGA ends semester, acknowledges Senate accomplishments

The last meeting of the 54th General Assembly of the Student Government Association consisted mainly of committee chairs, Executive Committee members and advisers recognizing the Senate’s accomplishments for the 2005-2006 academic year.

No legislation or new business was brought to the floor in the Thursday night meeting, held after the SGA-sponsored student forum for a Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs candidate.

SGA President James Orr was absent from the meeting, but his roommate Jeremy Brown delivered Orr’s executive report by proxy. “(Orr) said thanks for everyone’s help and support of everything SGA did this year,” Brown said. “He also wanted to thank everyone who ran or who gave their support in the elections.”

Academic Affairs Committee Chair Rebecca Dailey hailed Senate’s March 23 passing of a resolution recommending the university hire a campus-wide internship coordinator. Dailey also applauded the completion of a successful high school leadership conference. Dailey did not seek re-election to the 55th General Assembly.

Campus Observation Committee Chair David Taylor said his committee will continue to work to get a prominent sign at the Martin city limits hailing the city as the home of UTM.

Lacee North, chair of the Multicultural Affairs Committee, thanked her commitee for their continued diligence through the year. North added that her committee’s work is not done; her committee is sponsoring an International Student Appreciation Day on May 1. SGA adviser and UC Director Steve Vantrease thanked the Senate for the work they’ve done this year.

“You have addressed some issues and got some things done this year,” Vantrease told senators. “I want to thank you for participating in the vice chancellor interviews.”

Grayson Uldrich, Freshman Council representative, told senators about the recent talent show, sponsored by the Freshman Council. Uldrich will be given the proceeds from the talent show to buy supplies for Hurricane Katrina victims in Gulf Coast region. Uldrich will be going to the region as part of a Kappa Alpha Order service project.

SGA will inaugurate the 55th General Assembly, which will serve during the 2006-2007 academic year, along with the Executive Council, which will be composed of President James Orr, Vice President-elect Chris Cherry and Secretary General-elect Lindsey Sutherland, at noon Friday in UC 206.

All three Executive Committee members hail from the same political party, Effective Connections.
