Three senior Graphic Design majors, Dwan Anderson, Jee Seon Kwak, and James Reynolds, displayed their works at the Fine Arts Building Tuesday, April 4.
“I chose to become an Art Major because I like to learn new things,” said Reynolds. “Art was the least thing I knew.”
He says he has been a graphic artist since 2002. After four years of learning graphic design, he said he has learned a lot about art, as he wrote in his artist statement.
“As a graphic designer I strive to create innovative designs which stimulates both the mind and the eye.,” said Reynolds. “I feel that art is an experience for both viewers and artists. It has the ability to induce a state of mind which transcends logical reality, thus creating a flood of imagination and emotion. In some cases these experiences have the ability to change the way the world is viewed and in turn change the world.”
Reynolds works are a self-portrait, book cover, product catalog, box, brochure, postcard, billboard, letterhead, photograph, poster, table lamp, and others.
“My definition of art is anything a human has created with his or her own hands,” said Anderson in his artist’s statement. “I was never good at drawing pictures and other drawings but I learned a few techniques from my teachers and friends in art class.”
If he could use one title for all of his works displayed, he said he would title them “Say Hello to My Little Friend.” Anderson’s works are self-portrait, book cover, business card, box design, billboard, magazine cover, postcard, brochure, and so on.
He concludes his artist statement by saying that “I really like designing things on the computer. Now that art is a big part of my life I am having lots of fun with it.”
“Graphic Design is a very interesting experience to me,” wrote Jee Seon Kwak in her artist statement. She had studied art in Korea before she came to UTM.
Kwak said she chose to become a Computer Graphic major because of its creativity as she expresses in her artist statement. “In my exhibition, I tried to show my various creative experiences.”
Kwak’s works displayed are self-portrait, package design, hanging tag design, letterhead, logo design, painting, photograph, book cover design. She said she likes her hanging tag designs the best.
“Now Computer Graphic has become an indispensable design world, it is creating, performing and participating in the Arts. Then I tried to make my works based on these forms,” wrote Kwak in her artist statement.
Even though Kwak said she likes painting and drawing the best, it looks like Computer Graphic was another form of art that she experienced during her time here at UTM, and she really enjoyed it.
“Designing is not only computer tools, it is also communications,” wrote Kwak in her artist statement.
Their works run through April 15. The exhibitions are definitely worth seeing.
