Professor disagrees with Pacer coverage

I am writing a letter of concern regarding your publication of the arrest of two student-athletes in the October 10th newspaper.

I was unpleasantly surprised when the names of these student-athletes were mentioned. The smallness of the UTM campus presents a unique situation for these student-athletes because now they have to live with the repercussions of your article. I understand that what they did was inexcusable, but having them relive the situation again is not reasonable.

Every student on this campus has or will be in similar situations. Since these students were also athletes I feel you were trying to utilize them to make a distasteful point about student-athletes. By not printing the name of future students or student-athletes, you could prevent incidents from becoming "rumor mill" material.

As a UTM faculty member, I am here to encourage students to achieve their goals. I hope you also support this philosophy. In the future, please be courteous to other students and student-athletes who find themselves in similar incidents by not printing their names. You could avoid placing others in an awkward situation such as that which in these students now find themselves.
