Men place first, women sixth win at Arkansas-Monticello rodeo


The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s rodeo team won the team standings with 435 points this past weekend at the University of Arkansas at Monticello rodeo. The UTM’s women’s team finished sixth with 50 points.

In the men’s division, UT Martin dominated the top spot in bareback, calf roping and steer wrestling.

Jeff Fuehring won the bareback first round with an 81-point ride, while Scotty NeSmith was second, Martt Bright third and Russ Ratkowski fourth.

In the bareback’s second round, Bright claimed the top spot with a 78-point ride, while NeSmith was third and Fuehring fourth. Fuehring won the average with 155 on two, while NeSmith was second, Bright third and Ratkowski fourth.

Zak Danison scored points for UT Martin in the calf roping short go with his 9.7 run. Danison won the average with a total of 21.9 on two. The UTM cowboys also came away with points in the steer wresting competition. Boyd Quinley won the long go, while Zach Waggoner was second and NeSmith fourth.

In the steer wrestling short go, NeSmith turned in a 5.4 run. He won the average with 12.6 on two, while Justin Pope was fourth with 15.9 on two.

The women placed in the goat tying event and barrel racing. Kelly Miller finished second in the goat tying short go and fourth in the average with a time of 20.9 on two.

Audrey Lipsky finished third in barrel racing with an average time of 32.63 seconds in two runs.

“The competition was tight all the way,” said UTM rodeo coach John Luthi. “Like any rodeo, there were some good things and some tough things.”

The Skyhawks will host its 37th annual spring rodeo April 14-16. Advanced tickets are on sale now at the Boling University Center Information Desk on campus.

“We are looking forward to our home rodeo,” Luthi said. “A lot can still happen.” Teams will compete for the Ozark Region title and a berth in the college national finals rodeo set for June in Casper, Wyo.
