UTM Skyhawks defeated Tennessee Tech 30-23 in an overtime nail biting game today at Hardy Graham Stadium.
Sophomore quarter back Brady Wahlberg led the Skyhawks to victory with 188 passing yards and rushed for a total net of 100 yards.
“This was a character win. I can’t say enough about Brady and the rest of the team defensively,” Coach Matt Griffin said.
Sophomore defensive end Andre Plumber led the defense with four sacs for a total loss of 18 yards.
Scoring began when junior tailback Andrew Staten scored a touch down with 5:55 left on the clock, bringing the Skyhawks within eight points of Tennessee Tech.
Tennessee Tech only followed up with a three play drive, losing one yard.
After a drive consisting of 10 first downs, UTM scored again when Wahlberg completed a pass to sophomore wide receiver Orentheus Taylor. The score was tied up 23-23 after a successful two point conversion. Skyhawks scored 16 points with only eight minutes left.
The game went into overtime with UTM scoring on a 21 yard rush by Wahlberg and a successful kick after the touchdown.
TN-Tech’s quarter back was sacked three times and had one incomplete pass to end the game with the Skyhawks winning 30-23.
Defensive tackle Phillip Ezell was speechless. “I don’t know what to say. We played our hearts out.”
This ends a 43 game OVC losing streak for UTM.
