Giving blood can save lives

Many people dream about saving someone’s life in a heroic display of bravery. For many it is only a dream, but it can be a reality. You can help save a life.

The Lifeline Bloodmobile will visit UTM from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 3-4, in front of the UC. Donors will receive a free box of chocolates, a Valentine’s Day card to give to the person you are donating in honor of and free Domino’s pizza.

Lifeline Blood Services is the official supplier of blood to West Tennessee hospitals. That means your donation to Lifeline saves lives right here.

“Every year in West Tennessee 26,000 units of blood are required to meet the needs of area hospitals,” said Tammy Hurst, Weakley county recruiter, “and we need each individual to make a commitment and take the time to give blood.”

Blood drives on the UT Martin campus have been plagued by low turnouts the past year. With a population of over 6,000 students, faculty and staff, Lifeline only receives about 150 donations during each two-day UTM drive.

“UT Martin has the ability to host very successful blood drives if individuals will just see the need,” Hurst said. “Our goal for this drive is to receive over 150 donations per day. We will need your help to accomplish this task.”

If you think you are ineligible to give, Lifeline asks you to let their trained medical staff decide. Do not defer yourself; you may be able to give. Every donation counts. Your donation matters to someone, somewhere.

If you have any questions you can contact the agency at 800-924-6572 or visit its Web site at www.lifelinebloodserv.org. An hour of your time will mean a lifetime to someone else. If someone you loved needed your blood, would you take the time to donate? Then take the time to donate for someone you love Feb. 3-4 in front of the UC.
