Dr. Larry T. McGehee, UTM chancellor from 1971-79, will return to campus today for a reception and book signing from 2-4 p.m. in the Special Collections department of the Paul Meek Library.

“Southern Seen: Meditations on Past and Present” is a collection of McGehee’s newspaper columns about people, places and events in the South published by The University of Tennessee Press. His columns currently appear in 100 newspapers in eight states.

“Larry McGehee led this campus in a very effective manner during the 1970s,” said Chancellor Nick Dunagan. “We are looking forward to having him and [his wife] Betsy back on campus. I hope his many friends and associates will join us at his book signing.”

McGehee, a native of Paris, received a bachelor of arts degree from Transylvania College in Lexington, Ky. and bachelor of divinity, master of arts and doctoral degrees from Yale University.

Prior to becoming chancellor of UTM, he served as director and assistance vice president of university relations, executive assistant to the president and executive vice president at the University of Alabama. He left UTM to become special assistant to the president at UTK, a post he held until 1982.

Since then, he has served as vice president and professor of religion at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.
