First look for new students

S.O.A.R. welcomes high school seniors, future UTM students

During the past few years, UTM’s enrollment has been growing steadily, with more than 6,100 students enrolled last fall.

Judy Rayburn, Director of Admissions, said that 1,800 students already enrolled for the summer and fall 2005 semesters. The preliminary count suggests that UTM again could break an enrollment record.

The jump may also be linked to an influx in transfer students. Admissions reports 379 transfer students coming to UTM for the summer and fall semesters.

Rayburn said that the number of applicants has been up for the past two years. “We are optimistic that we will see another large upcoming freshman class,” said Rayburn. “We are really excited about the next school year.”

Also coming up this summer is the Summer Orientation and Registration, better know as S.O.A.R. The first S.O.A.R session that happened this weekend was filled to capacity, and the admissions office looks for the other two S.O.A.R. sessions to fill up quickly.

Although the average GPA will not be calculated until the fall semester, the incoming students’ average ACT score is 21.6 on a scale of 36.

Rayburn said, “We hope to continue to grow gradually, but we also want to be selective in admitting students that can graduate from UTM and be very successful.”
