Editorial: Wall project’s message meant for UTM

We support the Writing on the Wall project here on the UTM campus.

While we understand the inherent controversy that has arisen from the structure that symbolizes the ills of our society, we believe it needs to be brought to light.

Everyone has felt oppressed or discriminated against at some point in their life. Whether it was for being short, tall, skinny, rich, poor, fat, young, old, gay, straight, black or white, it has happened to each of us.

It is time to move past these barriers.

Diversity makes this campus whole in a time when unity is not just a convenience, but a necessary means in society. The wall sends the clear message that bigotry, at any level, will not be tolerated on our campus.

We’ve also sent this message beyond our campus, saying that a small West Tennessee university does not have to be left behind in times of radical change.

We strongly encourage all students, faculty and staff to join us at 4 p.m., Thursday, to tear down this wall of oppression and move past all things that hold us back.
