Another Homecoming has passed us by, but for many students the week might has well have occured at another campus. These students are in the vast majority on campus that are not involved with greek organizations.
We make this simple ascertion: If you aren’t greek or an alumni, “Homecoming” might as well be called “Home-going,” because it simply isn’t geared for you.
Now that’s not to say that the student body wasn’t offered plenty of opportunity to get involved with the process.
The SGA “Wild Gamecock” barbecue was open to any student group that was willing to shell out $25. Very few organizations’ coffers would be willing to part ways with that kind of cash. The SAC held its annual Lip Sync competition, again open to any student group willing to, well, make a fool of themselves. Despite being open to anyone, only Greek organizations chose to participate.
So why is it that homecoming has been reduced to a rather expensive party for greeks and alumni? Surely it’s all about the football game in the end.
Is it a lack of school spirit, or just tradition?
We don’t have the answers on this one. But a little more effort to bring all organizations to the table wouldn’t hurt.
