Lately, if students walk across University Street, they take their lives into their hands. An even better way to phrase it would be to say that their lives are on the line.
We understand that there’s not enough time in the day to get everything done, but people should not be in such a hurry that they hit someone.
We feel that this is carelessness on everyone’s part. Drivers should take the time to slow down when reaching a crosswalk.
Call us crazy, but we would rather be a few minutes late to class than running over a pedestrian and being charged with vehicular homicide.
On the other hand, we feel that students walking across the street shouldn’t assume that everybody will stop for them.
Before students step into the street, they should at least take a few seconds to see if the cars coming are showing signs of slowing down.
Another great idea would be if students hung up their cell phone for two seconds. No one can totally concentrate on the traffic when they’re trying to carry on a conversation.
At some campuses, the university will build a bridge over the road so that students can walk across the without actually stepping a foot on the street. Maybe UTM needs to think about building something similar if the roads continue to be this dangerous.
We believe that everyone needs to use a little common sense when driving and walking to class.
It’s sad that UTM students have to be leary of crossing the street, but in this fast-paced world, time and drivers stop for no one.
