Career and Counseling Services hosts ‘Lunch and Learn’ Wednesday forum

On Wednesday, Sept. 22, the UTM Counseling and Career Services launched “Lunch and Learn,” a new program geared to stimulate intellectual ability and to enhance personal and professional life.

The first meeting focused on finding and utilizing your personal learning style. Presiding over the meeting was Dr. Michelle Santiago, who encouraged students to “abandon what doesn’t work for you” and stressed that “there is no right way of learning.”

Santiago concentrated on three different learning styles: visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Each participating student took a short test to discover his or her own style. Santiago then gave several tips on what study method would be better suited for each style, such as the use of highlighters for visual learners and the importance of reading notes out loud for auditory learners.

Most of the attending students found the forum helpful. Sharita Anderson, a Nursing major from Jackson, agreed with the ideas presented. “You have to learn how to study the way that best fits you,” Anderson said.

The “Lunch and Learn” series will be held on designated Wednesdays throughout the school year in room 125 UC. Students are encouraged to attend, and may bring their lunch (either brown bag or tray from the Dining Services).

The next scheduled meeting is planned for Oct. 6 and will be called “Time Management — More Than Just Wearing a Watch.”
