Brundige wins re-election

With a 54-percent turnout in Weakley County, incumbent mayor Randy Brundige defeated UTM student Brent Smoyer to win re-election as Martin's mayor Tuesday night.

Brundige won by a 1,143-vote margin, picking up 70 percent of votes cast.

In his victory, Brundige swept all four Martin precincts, but Smoyer performed best at the Trinity Presbyterian Church box, where most UTM residents are registered. At Trinity, Smoyer mustered 219 votes, or 32 percent.

Smoyer's efforts to unseat Brundige were better on Election Day, as Brundige garnered 77 percent of 932 early votes.

Smoyer, 23, said the current city government lacks fiscal responsibility, and economic development and reformation was a major tenet of his unsuccessful campaign.
