Baseball blasts 23 runs against Morehead, drops conference series

The UTM baseball team picked up a single victory against OVC-member Morehead State in this past weekend’s three-game series. The Skyhawks dropped Saturday’s games 10-7 and 2-0. Sunday’s game was a complete opposite with the Skyhawks picking up the monstrous victory over the Eagles, 23-7.

Game one found Morehead jumping out to a 6-1 lead through the third inning. The Skyhawks lone run to that point came in the top of the second when Jason Hockaday scored of a double by Blake Turner.

The Skyhawks pulled close in the fourth, putting four runs on the board. The inning started off with a single by Chris Rezabek and Hockaday reaching on a fielder’s choice.

Turner then brought everyone home with a shot over the wall. Brett Spivy then added another run with a single run home run to bring the score to 6-4.

The score stayed there until the bottom of the seventh when Morehead added another run to their total.

The Skyhawks picked up one more in the top of the eighth off a run by Zach Dean who was knocked in by a double from Lance Renton. The Eagles refused to let the Skyhawks stay close and added three more runs in the bottom half to put the score at 10-6.

Douglas Nicodemus’ lone run in the top of the ninth wasn’t enough to pull out the comeback and the Skyhawks fell, 10-7.

Jacob Smothers was charged with the pitching loss in game one, throwing for 6.1 innings and giving up ten hits and seven runs. Only two Skyhawks picked up more than one hit on the day; Turner and Nicodemus each had two.

Game two’s score was a little lower but had the same outcome: a Skyhawk loss.

The Eagles put their first of two runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning. That would be the only run they would need as they shut out the Skyhawks. The added an insurance run in the fifth to pick up the 2-0 victory.

Adam Ledlow saw six innings of action on the afternoon, picking up his sixth loss of the season. He gave up eight hits and two earned runs while striking out two. Nicodemus once again led the batters with two hits.

Game three of the saw the offensive charge that the Skyhawks had been looking for all weekend.

The Skyhawks racked up 27 hits on Sunday afternoon. Spivy and Rezabek each had five hits and a homerun in the game. Spivy had 5 RBIs and Rezabek batted in three while scoring four runs.

Chad Green had four hits with three RBIs. Renton, Nicodemus and Nick Luper each had three hits.

The Skyhawks put up five runs in the first and the Eagles followed, tying the game at 5-all going into the second.

The Skyhawks then scored 11 unanswered runs to put the score at 12-5 headed into the fifth.

UTM put five more runs on the board in the top half, but the Eagles couldn’t keep up only adding one. The Skyhawks crossed the plate six more times in the game. The Eagles were left in the dirt only picking up one more run in the last four innings.

Ryan Rockholt picked up the win on the mound, throwing for five innings, striking out three and giving up eight hits and six runs. The Eagles were forced to empty the bullpen, using eight different pitcher to try and stifle the Skyhawk bats.

The Skyhawks are now 14-20 overall with a 5-6 record in the Ohio Valley Conference, which puts them in ninth place.

Up next for the Skyhawks are the Indians of Arkansas State today at 3 p.m. at Skyhawk field.

They continue with the non-OVC play tomorrow with a single game against the Lipscomb Bisons also at 3 p.m. at Skyhawk field.
