If you seek to view artistic ability, then you should have checked out an exhibition recently displayed by two students in the Fine Arts building.

Les MacDiarmid and Ji Yoon Kim displayed some of their best artwork in the senior art exhibit.

MacDiarmid is an Art major at UTM. He started his senior exhibition by passing out “serrographs” to the viewers. MacDiarmid said he was interested in art at a young age. He was discouraged in art and took a break to become a photographer. MacDiarmid was a photographer for 18 years, but he regained his confidence in his art.

He started in sports, then, once he felt confident about his work, he moved on from sports to companies.

MacDiarmid said that photography helped him with his artwork because he used some of the same techniques.

“In every photograph you can talk about how something is missing, but in painting if something is missing you can go back and change things,” MacDiarmid said.

“Picasso is my favorite artist because he was imaginative, versatile, and he didn’t copy reality,” he said .

MacDiarmid said he doesn’t have a favorite piece because all of his artwork has a special meaning to him. After graduating, he said, he plans to continue painting.

The other outstanding artist who shared the spotlight was Ji Yoon Kim, a senior Graphic Design major, displayed images dealing with image and text. She has been in the United States for eight years, and has attended UTM for four years.

Kim is originally from South Korea and has been fascinated with art since she was young. Kim said her favorite design was a portrait of herself. The portrait was composed of her name and the text was put together to make the image of Kim’s face.

“It took a lot of time to finish this piece. I spent about 10 hours on just this one design,” Kim said.
